INFORMATION SHEET

Dust off your walking shoes and water bottles, due to the success of their first charity walk last year, Rhondda Rotary is planning another one to support dementia groups and those living with dementia in the Rhondda.

Sponsorship

All sponsorship monies raised by entrants will support local dementia groups.

The Route

The route is 8K in length, will commence at Treorchy RFC Clubhouse, Lower Regent Street, Treorchy, CF42 6PN, the Registration Centre, proceed North onto High Street to The Stag Hotel, continue onto Bute Street, turn left at the White Dragon onto Cardiff Street, turn left onto River Terrace, over river bridge onto Dyfodwyg Street, turn right onto Station Road, onto Pentwyn Road, Maindy Crescent, Church Road, Gelli Road, Tyisaf Road, Ystrad Road, Llewellyn Street, Carne Street, Treorchy RFC.

Refreshments

Water will be available at the Registration Centre. A free buffet will be available for participants at the Registration Centre at the completion of the walk.

 Toilets

Toilets will be available at the Registration Centre.

 Parking

There is a small car park at the Registration Centre and there is a large car park at the Oval Rugby ground, which is accessed by driving past the Lidl store, turning right and following the access road alongside the river. The Registration Centre can be accessed by crossing the river bridge from the car park and turning right onto Regent Street, the Centre is at the end of this street.

 Register on arrival

Participants must register at the Registration Centre on arrival. Registration starts at 10.00 AM.

Start time

The walk will start at 11.00 AM.

Event close down

The whole organization will close down at 3.00 pm. All participants must plan to finish by this time.

Booking out at the end of the Event

Every participant must book out at the Registration Centre when he or she has finished. If leaving en-route, participants must report to the nearest marshal or the Registration Centre (This is a safety requirement to ensure that all participants are accounted for).

Dogs

Participants are allowed to bring dogs on the walk, but they must be kept on a lead at all times and owners must clean up after their dogs

Pushchairs and prams

The route is all on public footpaths, so pushchairs and prams can be used by participants.

Litter

Participants should dispose of any litter in Council waste bins along the route, or take it home.

Clothing

All participants should wear appropriate footwear and clothing and carry suitable waterproofs if there is a forecast for wet weather.

Young persons

All Young Persons aged 15 years and under MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY AN ADULT.

Medical support

Medical support will be available. An emergency telephone number will be provided on the day of the walk.

Entry forms are available on the website, by clicking the button at the end of the Registration section or from the

Friends of Rhondda Rotary Community Shop, High Street, Treorchy.

Entry is by emailing a completed registration form to rhonddarotary@gmail.com

or by handing it into the Community Shop, for each person taking part.

Entry fee, payment, to be paid on the day when registering.

Every participant must bring a completed registration form on the day.

Closing date for entries

Entries on line should be made as early as possible, the final closing date is Friday 28th June 2024.

Certificates

On completion of the walk, each participant will receive a signed certificate authenticating the walk.

 TERMS AND CONDITIONS

“The event” – the 8K charity walk for dementia.

Rhondda Rotary includes the Committee and “the organiser” means either or both.

Registration

Applications to participate should be made either online at www.rhonddarotary.co.uk or via  the Rotary Community Shop, no later than Friday 28th June 2024.  Applications may be made after that but before the day, and use the Contact form on the website, to say how many will be entering.

All participants must complete the registration form found below and bring it with them on the day.

Children under the age of 16 must have the consent of a parent or guardian who must also sign their agreement at the end of this form.

No entrant will be registered unless full contact details in case of emergency have been completed on the registration form.

Refunds

The event is for charity, so no entry fee will be refunded unless the whole event is cancelled by the Committee.

Safety

Rhondda Rotary will use its best endeavours to ensure that the event is safe for all participants, but each participant must also take reasonable precautions to ensure their own safety. This would include, but is not limited to:

  • Wearing suitable footwear and clothing for the anticipated conditions
  • Following the rules of the Highway Code and the Countryside Code insofar as they apply to pedestrians
  • Following the instructions of the event organisers and of marshals along the route –
  • Behaving in a sensible and responsible manner
  • Not doing anything that might endanger the health, safety or wellbeing of any person including themselves, other participants, and
  • Not consuming alcohol immediately before or during the event.

In registering for or taking part in the event you acknowledge that you do so at your own risk and that conditions may occur which give rise to risks that are unforeseen and / beyond the control of the Committee

Liability

Rhondda Rotary Club accepts no liability before after or during the event for damage to or loss of any property belonging to, or brought to the event by, any participant. Rhondda Rotary accepts no liability for any injury to any participant except where the injury is directly caused by the negligence of Rhondda Rotary.

Disqualification
The Committee reserves the right to disqualify from the event any participant who appears not to be fit to take part or who acts in a manner which the Committee considers to be a breach of these conditions and/or may adversely affect the reputation of Rhondda Rotary.
Health and Fitness

All participants must satisfy themselves, if necessary, by taking medical advice, that they are in sufficiently good health and physically able to undertake the route.

Any prospective participant who has a disability must ensure both that they are fit to participate in the walk and that they have support arranged to accompany or otherwise support them on the relevant route before registering for the event.

Sponsorship

The event will be organised, certified and marshalled to a level appropriate for sponsors of participants to be able to be satisfied that the event is appropriate for sponsorship. Sponsorship forms are available by clicking the button at the end of the page or from the Friends of Rhondda Rotary Community Shop.

The entry fee will be applied both for facilities required for the event and for local dementia groups supported by Rhondda Rotary Club. Participants are encouraged to raise sponsorship to support the event. It is suggested that a minimum of £20 is raised.

Publicity

The Organisers may arrange for the local press to attend the event and they may choose to take photographs. The Organisers may also take photographs that it may use for publicity in connection with this and future events or to publicise the activities of Rhondda Rotary.

Images of children under 16 will not be taken or used if it can be avoided.

Data Protection

By registering for the event, you are authorizing Rhondda Rotary to process the information you have given on the form for the purpose of the event under the Data Protection Act 1998. The information will be retained until all administration for the event has been completed.  It will not be passed on to any other organization.

RHONDDA ROTARY DEMENTIA WALK 2024 – Route Details for participants

  1. START
  2. Leave Treorchy Rugby Club car park turning to the left towards the main road.
  3. Turn left onto High Street (main road) A4058. Keep to the left-hand pavement.
  4. Proceed straight along High Street for approx 1/4 mile.
  5. At the Stag Hotel proceed onto Bute Street.
  6. Proceed along Bute Street and at the White Dragon pub turn left into Cardiff Street.
  7. Turn left onto River Terrace, cross over river bridge onto Dyfodwg Street.
  8. Proceed along Dyfodwyg Street and at the Parc and Dare theatre, turn right onto Station Road A4061
  9. Proceed on Station Road, passing Treorchy Station on the left, continue on Park Crescent A4061, approaching the Cwmparc road sign.
  10. At the Cwmparc junction, turn left over the bridge onto Pen -Twyn Road A4061 (signposted Tonypandy) CAUTION due to narrow pavement.
  11. Continue along Pen-Twyn Road A4061 – keep to the right-hand pavement.
  12. Take care on Pen-Twyn Road when crossing the bottom of the Bwlch Mountain Road (no pavement).
  13. Proceed along Pen-Twyn Road for approx 1 mile.
  14. Proceed onto Maindy Crescent B4223 then onto Maindy Road B4223 with Ton Pentre Police Station on the right.
  15. Arriving at The Windsor Pub on the right, turn right onto Church Road B4223.
  16. At the zebra crossing, cross to the left-hand side of the road.
  17. Continue through mini-roundabout onto Gelli Road B4223 passing the Gelli Pub on the left.
  18. Continue through Gelli for approx. 1 mile keeping to the left-hand pavement.
  19. Bear left as the road turns onto Tyisaf Road.
  20. Proceed along Tyisaf Road over the River Rhondda bridge, then the railway bridge, to the Carter’s Corner T-junction (main road).
  21. Turn left onto Ystrad Road A4058 (main road) keeping to the left-hand pavement.
  22. Cross at the traffic lights, proceeding straight ahead – Take care that you cross safely.
  23. Continue through Pentre A4058 (main road).
  24. Proceed along Llewellyn Street A4058 (main road), passing St Peter’s Church on the right, onto Carne Street then High Street A4058 heading towards Treorchy (main road).
  25. Turn left signposted Lidl’s Store.
  26. Turn right to return to Treorchy RFC.
  27. FINISH
